School of Visual Arts was called Cartoonists and Illustrators School when it was established in 1947 by the Tarzan cartoonist Burne Hogarth and Silas Rhodes.
The school is famous for its cartooning and illustration programs and
teachers in the past have been -
Will Eisner (Spirit), Harvey Kurtzman (founding editor Mad Magazine), Art Spiegelman (Maus), David Mazzucchelli (Asterios Polyp, Batman Year One).
Their Alumni include -
Steve Ditko (co creator - Spiderman), Bill Plympton (Oscar winning animator), Rebecca Sugar (Adventure Time), Matt Davies (Pulitzer prize winner), John Holmstrom (Creator Punk magazine), Carlos Saldanha (Director and co director of Rio, Robots and Ice Age franchise).
I first heard about School of Visual Arts in 2008 when I saw the first page of their Continuing Education brochure.
I always thought of applying for their MFA program in Cartooning (illustration as visual essay).
